Last week we finally made the big move into our new house. Everyone says moving is one of life’s most stressful experiences, so here are a few tips I picked up along the way…
Hire men (or women!)
Buying a house is hella expensive (of course!), and I can see the temptation to save a few quid where you can. But for the sake of your sanity, don’t try to move by yourself. We hired two men and a van, and it was honestly the best £200 we’ve ever spent. They practically did everything and made the whole process so much easier. Getting heavy furniture out of tight spots – and to your new place in one piece – is definitely a job for a professional.
Pack an overnight bag
I was aware of the things I would need when we got to the house, but they still ended up getting shoved into the top of various boxes in a last minute panic. Pack yourself a bag as if you were going away for a few nights, and you won’t have to wear the same clothes two days running like I did!
Clear out as much as you can before you move – and then clear out more. Trust me, when you get to your empty new house and see that blank canvas, you won’t want to fill it with all your old tat. Save yourself the hassle by being brutal before you go.
One room at a time
Once you’re in your new house, it’s easy to get distracted and start opening boxes all over the place. We managed to get our bedroom looking lovely on the first day, which meant we could go to bed and wake up in a nice calm room. Try to take it one room at a time and give yourself a haven from the boxes.
